Social Bookmarking on the Mac – The Ultimate Viral Marketing
Social bookmarking is one of the hottest phenomena of the Internet-and like other such phenomena, Internet marketers have adopted it in a big way.
Unlike the bookmarks you save in Safari or other browsers (usually by hitting Command-D) your favorites on social bookmarking sites are accessible to everyone. You organize, rank and classify the bookmarks with tags, which are words or phrases you assign to describe the content. The most popular social bookmarking site is delicious.com (formerly spelled del.ici.ous), with millions of users.
Social bookmarking has a respectability that exceeds that of the search engines. This is because real human beings choose which sites to bookmark, based on the quality of the content, not a bot or piece of software.
Users of social bookmarking sites will look over the bookmarks of other users with whom they share an interest and, if they like them, add those bookmarks to their own list. There are even RSS feed so that people can see what others are tagging, a textbook example of viral marketing.
There are tools to make social bookmarking easier. BookMacster for the Macintosh merges and manages bookmarks in Safari, Firefox, Chrome, Camino, iCab, Opera and OmniWeb, and on the web with Delicious, Pinboard, and Google Bookmarks.
Marketers have taken up the cause of social bookmarking as a means to promote their own sites. Does that corrupt the concept of social bookmarking? I don’t know, but nobody is going to pass up a way to promote their site if it works. Many people claim to get a large percentage of their traffic through the use of social bookmarking.
So what can you do to put the power of social bookmarking to work for you? Here are two main considerations:
1. Produce good content. Full-time blogger Darren Rouse has noted that Delicious items that make it to the top of the list faster include how tos, lists, humor and technical articles.
2. Make it easy for people to bookmark your site. If you have a blog, you can use excellent WordPress plugin called Sociable that allows direct tagging for several Social Bookmarking sites. I like OnlyWire, which allows you to post your link to dozens of social bookmarking sites at once.
If you add the OnlyWire Bookmark & Share button to your website or blog, not only will you give your visitors an easy way to share your articles with their friends, but you will be able to use the OnlyWire service to submit your own sites for free (it’s normally $10 a month). It works on both Mac and Windows.
According to one list, these are the top 10 social bookmarking services, but take this with a grain of salt, because this list may change by the time you read this:
Delicious – Listible – Digg – StumbleUpon – BlinkList – Spurl – Magnolia – Furl – BlogMarks – Reddit
